Ruth McHugh MBA, FCPA, FCMA, ICD.D began her leadership role with the office in June 2013. As Chief Operating Officer, Ruth’s areas of oversight include:
- create a culture of individual and shared accountability for results
- integrate the backroom functions of a professional audit office into the seamless delivery of service to front line audit teams
Ruth’s diverse career in private industry and not-for-profit brings a wealth of business and governance experience to her role. Before joining the Office of the Auditor General, Ruth was CFO and Director of Operations at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Prior to that Ruth had a distinguished career with Company’s Coming Publishing Limited, becoming its Director of Operations and Controller.
As Co-Chair of the Alberta Accountants Unification Agency Ruth built a strong legacy of collaborative and inclusive leadership, demonstrated by her leading influence in the successful unification of the CA, CMA, and CGA designations to achieve the CPA designation in Alberta. Prior to being elected as provincial Co-Chair for the merger, Ruth served two consecutive terms as board chair for CMA Alberta and a term as Vice Chair of the CMA Canada Council of Chairs. In 2011 she was named a Fellow of The Society of Management Accountants of Canada for her distinguished service to the Canadian accounting profession.
Ruth is currently a member of the CPA Alberta Board of Directors, the TELUS Edmonton Community Board, the CPA Canada Women’s Leadership Council, the Canadian Council of Legislative Auditors (CCOLA) HR Committee and the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) Edmonton Executive Committee.
